I bought unit 10 / 9, which is the first day it was available here in Kansas City. I've done hundreds of photos comparing the images side side with my G10 in various environments. This Review my first impression is based on the limited time I had. I eagerly awaiting the launch of this device. I have a Nikon D90 DSLR, but many times they prefer to take a compact. In the past, the Canon G-10 was used for this purpose, but the S90 has a better performance in low light and a smaller size.

The first thing I wanted was to test the image quality and noise at high ISO settings. Most amateur photographers and professionals know that the low light performance is the number one factor that influence the camera and target prices. This is the main reason for a zoom lens f/2.8 costs 3-5 times more than f/3.5-5.6 zoom. Canon PowerShot S90 works very well in this regard. The RAW series S90 at ISO 800 are equal or superior to the G10 RAW ISO400 fixed. Both the luminance and noise chrominance are lower in the S90 images. This represents an improvement Case 1, which is what I expected. These comparisons were made all with noise reduction disabled in the camera and the DPP software. I have tried all other ISO and found the S90 is better in all parameters above 100 ISO and the two chambers equal IQ has demonstrated at the base of ISO 80 and 100.

Canon also has the S90 with an f/2.0 lens rapid compared to f/2.8 G-10, but this part of the camera does not impress me. The aim is that the advantage of a Case in opening the most comprehensive and detailed close up there immediately. The G10/G11 is faster in telephoto lens and the difference is negligible at all zoom settings in the middle. Both lines are equally strong objectives throughout its zoom.

The ergonomics of the device Photo take some time to adjust. I wanted a small camera and the S90 definitely fits the bill. But now that I'm on, I whether it might be too small. I hope it will be more comfortable in my hands as I used to. In the G-10 could operate all controls on the right rear of the camera with the thumb of the hand holding the camera. With the S90 it controls less time can be used with hand and I feel like I could drop this camera, because I can not get a good grip on it. Other concerns are ergonomic control ring back becomes too easy and I found myself not wanting to adjust the parameters of this fact, it has never been a problem in the G-10. I think that may be lost outside the mark of the ISO and exposure compensation in the G-10, but I put the control ring before adjusting the setting ISO and the truth is that we must use it more before saying that the controls are easily accessible, which should further increase the use increased. None of the concerns I have on the size and camera control to dissuade me from buying, compromise is the penalty for small size and lead to better performance.

The camera comes with a newer version (3.7) for Canon Digital Photo Professional software. There is not much difference compared to previous versions, but there is a good improvement: section of the lens aberration is activated for images taken with the S90. This allows the correction of vignetting, CA and distortion. I do not understand why the same controls that are not available for files RAW taken with the G-10. No function recovery in the software, which is a disappointment. More discouraging factor is the software that Canon has not yet published a new RAW codec, the current version (1.5) is not compatible with the S90 and G11. This allows RAW file for viewing on Windows and thumbnails will be created in Windows Explorer. I am sure they are working on an update, but I would have this ready when the device was released.

I went step by step through the menus and functions of the two rooms in my comparison and most functions are very similar. The S90 has less options, and FAs of the remote, but I do not think that something is missing.

Thought to give this camera just 4 stars because of the few punches that I mentioned earlier, but then decided not to be fair. The title of "Best Compact has been feverishly debated on the web, with more votes from the G10 and LX3. But now I think the new version of both Canon S90 and G11 will soon finish its deliberations. There is no doubt in my mind that this pair is superior to all competitors. Therefore, a five-star rating is the only logical choice. I recommend this camera.
